So I have some fonts that are in library>fonts but do not appear in font book or illustrator font list

also no fonts names listed in attributes, when you highlight font in the artwork, (but does list whether it is regular/bold!)

-also when I go about illustrator(11) it gives me info but locks program and have to force quit

Hello Paul,

The problem is the font. There are still out there some fonts that are for Windows non compatible with Mac and vice versa. Illustrator will make the effort to use the non compatible font which will result in locking the program.

That is way is in your System Font folder, but it does not recognize it as font.

I hope this helps.

Thanks-a good guess but I have used this font for years and have no problem with it until now!

1. As I said in attributes -it gives me the bold/regular part of all the fonts, but not the fonts name, but it is in they are all in the font list in illustrator.

2. This particular font (hel black) is in library> fonts but not in font book/illustrator font list -how do I put it in there?

Clear your font cache.

There are a number of ways to do it, I use FontExplorer (which if you were only using it for cache clearing would be kind of overkill...)

thanks-but still no cigar!

I went into this site to see how you clear font cache. Its so old this site it only goes up to 10.3 never mind 10.4 tiger and now leopard!

So it says go to home>library>preferences remove com.apple.fontbook plist+ com.appleATS plist ALSO open library>caches>ATS folder delete font cache(501) restart , empty trash

-still the problem is there!!!

Adobe also has it's own set of caches that you'll want to clear as well. Search font cache on this forum and you should come up with their location or an easy method of clearing them.

What are the fonts that you're having trouble with? Not Zebra, I hope.

this doing my head in, and this site is not helping any. Cos I have done all I can re:-font cache clearing as above and still have the problem

So where do all the fonts live- cos I will empty the whole thing and reload them as i have them all on disc-Where do I add fonts to?

What are ffil fonts cos this site says osx does not recognise them and I have now chucked them!

Look if you want them to show in Illustrator simply either load them in Font Book or put them in the Library>Application Support>Adobe>Fonts

Or get Font Agent Pro and just load the fonts in that by drag and drop it will mange duplicate fonts check for corrupt font and allow you to activate and deactivate fonts in one interface.

Wade-look ..... in Adobe folder there are no fonts there is- adobe registration,hyphenation,typespt,web,xmp... only

Also while I am at it in... hard disk>library>fonts...there is nothing

this site told me... Mac OS X supports the following font formats:

.dfont
Multiple Master (Mac OS X 10.2 and later only)
OpenType (.otf)
TrueType (.ttf)
True Type Collection (.ttc)
Type 1 (PostScript)

...so I deleted ffil fonts thinking they were corrupting fonts now web/mail is goobledeegook!
Have gone for trial of your software but i do not think this will help. As fontbook already warns you if font is corrupt when putting it in there. I had ATM years ago and chucked it, too complicated, was ok if you had lots of clients needing their own typefaces

I do not know what you are exactly referring to but the fonts should be here unless you moved them. But from what you tell me you should not be doing this yourself as you seemed very confused and not properly organized at all.

FAP will make the fonts available to all your applications there will be no problem except the problem might be with you yourself. You are doing things to your system and the fonts you should not be doing like manually relocating them and trashing things.

Type 1 (PostScript) fonts require 2 files to make them work.

The FFIL files are screen fonts which load into the OS/programs in order to show up in the menus. They should show up as Font Suitcase in the KIND column of the finder. You will also need the corresponding LWFN file which is the postscript outline file. That will show up as Postscript Type 1 outline font in the KIND column of the finder. That is used to render the font on screen and output it.

OSX needs both of those in the same location in order to work correctly. Needing two pieces is just part of the problem. The names of the files are also different. The PostScript parts usually having abreviated names.

And it's more complex than that. One FFIL file actually may have many screen fonts inside it for the different variations of the font family. Then you will need to make sure you have separate LWFN files for all of those.

I know it's confusing. The 2-piece font just asks for problems. Unfortunately that is how Adobe invented them 20+ years ago.

OSX makes it harder by not letting you open the FFIL file to see what's inside. In OS 9 and earlier you could open the suitcases and add or remove screen fonts - even add unrelated fonts all to the same suitcase

Well I've rambled enough about Type one Fonts. I hope my first few paragraphs clear up some of it for you.

Thanks for that Robert.

As for Wade what is your problem!?! Get a life and get off this forum.

Have now got fonts back up working, or should I say reinstalled as Fontbook & Illustrator ditched most of them!!

As I said initially:

In attributes -it gives me the bold/regular part of all the fonts, but not the fonts name,

but it is in the drop down font list in Illustrator. -Answers on a postcard!- thanx

Well let me put it this way I definitely will not respond to any of your queries again.

I wish you well and good luck with what ever you are doing with Illustrator.
