Discussion:
HELP! How to Delete just the text from type on a path tool without deleting path after a transform?

Here's the situation: I drew three paths and used the type on a path tool to add text to them. Then, I reflected these three complicated paths, which I don't want to redraw, using Object:Transform:Reflect (vertical). However, it did not reflect just the paths, it also reflected the text on them, giving it a mirror appearance. (The document has long since been saved, so I can't just go back to the original paths as drawn by using undo.)
I'm assuming the simplest solution is to delete the text part and just keep the path, and then use the text on a path tool to create new, unreflected text. However, for the life of me, I can't seem to delete just the text insertion area without deleting the path. Try it yourself at home and then let me know what solutions you come up with -- it's probably something simple I'm missing.

Slightly complicated but doable:

1. Select all text with Type tool. Copy. Paste onto artboard (as straight Point type) and just move off to the side for now.

2. Select original path with Direct Selection tool. Copy. Delete entire original type on a path object. Paste in front to place copy of path in original position.

Now you have on your artboard: a) the path to which you want to attach the type; b) the type itself off to the side.

3. With the Pen tool, click on the right endpoint of the path. This will reverse the path's direction.

4. Select all text with the Type tool. Copy. Place cursor at start point of path and click. Paste text.

Where you think you made a misstep is where you made one. Be careful to select JUST the PATH, not the whole object, then proceed. (Might be easier to make that delicate selection in Outline mode or with Smart Guides on, and make sure you're using the hollow selection tool, not the solid one.)

Hm. This doesn't seem to be working. I wonder what I'm missing. I selected all the text with the type tool, copied, pasted, moved off to side, (though I actually don't need to keep the original text -- I plan to type in something new). I selected the original path with direct selection tool. (This did not copy just the path -- it also copied the backwards text insertion point -- I don't know if that's where I went wrong.)
I then deleted the original type on path object, pasted in front. I clicked on the right endpoint of the path with the Pen tool. This reversed the path's direction by flipping it upside down, instead of side to side. I finally managed to click on it in such a way that it reversed the insertion point side to side (not sure how I did that and could not duplicate it), but it did not affect the direction of the text itself. As I typed in the letters, they showed up left to right but were still mirrored. . . any thoughts??

Yay! It worked! I had to use the direct selection lasso to select all points on the path without selecting the text object -- for some reason when I used the direct selection tool itself and dragged a marquee around the path, it selected the type object -- and clicking directly on the path with the direct selection tool selected only a segment. The group selection tool seemed to work if I clicked once. Can you tell I'm a beginner? LOL -- still wrestling with basic selection issues. Thanks for your help!

It's OK.

Try pressing the option key, then selecting just the path with the Direct Selection tool.

And it must be by option-clicking with the Direct Select tool (or an unmodified click with the poorly-named Group Select tool.)

The CS text engine selects the entire text object on a marquee drag, even with the direct select tool and even with the "Type Object Select by Path Only" preference on, a frustrating change from the AI 10 behavior.
