*Can't print the illustration - Error Message

I'm working on a file I received from a design firm. I don't know what version
it was actually created in, but it's being sent, via e-mail, as an Illustrator
8 file. I'm working in Illustrator CS. Whenever I try to print this particular
file, I get the same error message. If I try 'save as' another type of document
(eps for example) I get another error message that says: Can't save the
illustration. Can't print the illustration.

I have been able to export the document as an illustrator 3 legacy file.
I then opened it in Macromedia's FreeHand and was able to print. But when
I export it back into Illustrator, I get the same error message again.

This is extremely frustrating. Is there anyone out that that has had this
problem? Might any one know how to correct it?

Many thanks in advance,

-m.

I have run into this problem about 5 times. In each case the culprit was a older font from the early 90"s. Try outlining all text. This should allow you to print your file. If this works the problem is a font used in your file. Through trial and error you should be able to isolate the problem font a purchase a newer copy.

Hope this helps,
Mike

I'm glad merge is here!

Welcome to the forum.

This is the first week (or couple weeks anyway) I've noticed your name. Excuse me, if I'm wrong.

That did not work. I found another post where they say that the problem is caused by too many spot colors. And that there is a limit of i think 28 spot colors.

Adrian,

Illustrator CS does have a limit of 28 spot colors--a limit earlier versions of Illustrator did not have. If you have a document with more than 28 spot colors, you will get a "cannot print Illustration" error message.

So do you have more than 28 spot colors in the document?
