Discussion:
ACR .tmp files

Just purchased Adobe CS2 Standard for Mac. Before this, I had been using Illustrator 8.0 for Mac.
I've been creating and saving Illustrator CS2 files in a folder. Later, when I go to open the folder
to continue working on the original graphic, I see a growing number of other 'mysterious' files in the folder, each prefixed with 'Acr', then a series of eight numbers, and ending with '.tmp'.

For example:

Acr23721388.tmp

Why is this happening? How may I stop generating all these .tmp files?

Thanks for your help.

I'm getting these files with Illustrator in CS1 only after upgrading to OS X 10.4 Tiger, have you upgraded as well George? It seems to be making Illustrator's normally invisible temporary files visible.

I'm going to create some new Illustrator preferences to see if that cures it and I've also just gone to OS X 10.4.1 so I'll get back to see if these cure it.

As a word of reference the last time I had something like this happen was when I was running Norton AntiVirus but as I've completely removed this app it can't be that.

Nope, it's still happening after the upgrades. I would have though it's up to Adobe to come out with a patch to make the files invisible again and make sure they're deleted afterwards.

Apologies as there's already a thread running covering this problem. I didn't see it first time around.

Thanks Garry, Keep me posted if you discover a solution to the Acr .tmp file dilemma.
It's a logistical nightmare to deal with all the 'extra' files. Any other suggestions about dealing with the problem will be most helpful.

Another thing I've noted when working with Illustrator layers... layers that I haven't added myself seem to be cropping up while I'm working on an existing layer that I have created.
Any thoughts?

Thanks.

George, would you mind verifying whether you too are on Tiger? If not, what OS are you running on?

As for the additional layers, it is possible that you are pasting in content from other Illustrator files with the "Paste Preserves Layers" option set? (You can access this option through the flyout menu in the Layers palette.)

Thanks,
Frank

Running AICS2 and 10.4.1 and I get the temp files occassionally. It would appear to happen only when working on very complex illustrations. Doing something that takes a while to complete, it's almost as if these files are scratch files being written for large processes.
