I've learnt how to cut a circle in half with the knife tool using one straight line, but I now want to cut the circle into two using zig-zag straight lines, like pointy teeth, how do I do that? I can do it, but it doesn't separate the circle into two closed paths.

THANKS! I'm on a steep learning curve...

Don't do that with the Knife tool. Instead:

- Draw a filled circle
- On top of this circle draw a straight stroked line
- The stroke is selected: Filter > Distort > Zig Zag: Choose the desired options/values
- Select both the circle and the zig-zag line, then click the Pathfinder Divide button at the bottom of the Pathfinder Palette
- Ungroup the resulting object, if you like
