Unable to use the slice tool.

I've got an unusual issue that I just can't figure out. I'm just trying to slice some simple navigation for a web site, and my slice tool is unavailable. When I select it and move it over my artboard it turns into a slashed circle. When I open other files that I sliced previously, I have the same issue. Is it possible that I've forgotten to turn something on or off? My color mode is RGB across the board. I trashed my prefs and rebooted. Any ideas? I'd like to think of myself as an Illustrator pro--but I'm dumbfounded.

Are you possibly on a locked layer?

That's weird, I have the same issue. All layers are unlocked. Using AICS3. Menu Object>Slice is also grayed out, even if an object is selected.

Don't take me wrong- but I KNOW Illustrator. I've been using it for ten years and I LOVE it- I'd say it's my specialty. That's what makes this really weird. I can't figure it out. (That's not to say that I'm not missing something really obvious- I am getting a little loopy in my old age ;o). Sounds like Ray is having the same problem though...

It is apparently a bug you have locked slices selected but if you look in the view menu the lock slices is still available to be selected so it looks like it is not lock.

It took me a few minutes to figure it out but I know I have seen this and it just dawned on me that if two highly experience user could not figure it out then it must be something you would not expect.

I looked at the view menu in the past but since the slices did not look locked then I figure they were not. But that is not the case. Select lock slices again it will unlock the slices and remain as lock slice if you choose lock slices then it will lock the slices but the option will still be to lock slices.

We did miss something obvious…

Go to View>Lock Slices. This is a toggle. Unfortunately it does not show whether it is on or off from the menu.
